65DaysofStatic - The Destruction of Small Ideas
65DaysofStatic. The Destruction of Small Ideas. 2007. 3 stars.
A lively and intricate post-rock album, The Destruction of Small Ideas has the UK’s 65DaysofStatic taking their math rock stylings and pushing them into new and interesting directions. Rather than delving into the soft-loud, slow burn dynamics of other post rock bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, 65Days opt for more spastic and immediate exercises, weaving technical and complex guitar work with hammering piano lines, synth-stings and electronica-tinged drum beats a la Venetian Snares.
The album is entirely instrumental, with the exception of the hardcore inspired closer “The Conspiracy of Seeds” featuring the punk band Circle Takes the Square. The mathematical guitar work is complemented by the equally perplexing electronic breakbeats that drill and weave throughout the chaos. The musicianship here is engaging to say the least but suffers from the lackluster production that plagues the album. The lack of dynamic mixing to accentuate the complex layers of sound often leaves the compositions feeling unfinished and downplays their full potential. Aside from these technical issues, the complexity of this music makes for a rewarding listen, breaking the conventional post rock mold by offering bombastic fits of noise rock, shifting genre boundaries and time signatures with every turn.
